Walden Castle

Walden Castle, erected between 1141 and 1143 by Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex, served as a pivotal stronghold to bolster his regional influence. Initially featuring a square Norman keep and bailey wall, the castle fell into King Stephen's hands in 1143 during Geoffrey's arrest. Despite Geoffrey's subsequent efforts to reclaim it, Walden Castle remained unreclaimed upon his death in 1144. In 1157, under King Henry II's orders, the castle was weakened to thwart its use in further conflicts. Ownership eventually passed to the De Bohun family, who obtained a licence to fortify it in 1347. Today, only the core of the first two stories of the keep remains, a testament to its rich history.
